March 17th, 2006

What better resource for our state is there than Michigan.org?

The website is a cornucopia of information that is relevant to anyone who lives in, or is from, Michigan. A State initiative which has had great success is the SmartZone initiative. What is a SmartZone you ask? Please take the time to read this description SmartZones from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) website. Read the rest of this entry »

Locals Rule

March 17th, 2006

Decades ago, consumers visited traditional brick and mortar storefronts in their cities to see what new products where coming to market. The staff at Sagnasty.com are admittedly not historians, however, this presumably is the time when downtowns across the country flourished. Perhaps some of you actually remember the “glory” days of Saginaw’s very own bustling downtown.

The concept of technology clusters has always intrigued me. I wondered why so much development was focused on the coasts. What was wrong with the rest of the country? Why couldn’t new technology development be setup in states that need a new economic overhaul, say Mid-Michigan for example?

Subdomain madness

March 4th, 2006

Is it me, or has anyone else noticed the mad rush on subdomains. Yes the excitement of Web 2.0 has me following sites such as Techcrunch and Mashable.com. I find myself racing to newsvine.com, zoto.com, campfirehq.com, joyent.com, strongspace.com, and naturally textdrive.com to get the subdomain that I want. When the web was new we all raced for the top level domain names of our choice. Now let the races begin for http://ontiveros.nextbigthing.com.

Enables teams to easily communicate and share information using the Joyent platform’s web mail, calendars, contacts, and files.
San Anselmo, CA — Joyent, a provider of web-based team collaboration software, has launched a hosted version of its software platform. Using only a web browser, teams access the Joyent online software platform to organize and share team files, calendars, contacts, and emails. Three monthly service plans are available: $15 for four users and 5 GB of storage; $50 for 10 users and 25 GB of storage; and $100 for 25 users and 100 GB of storage. Visit http://www.joyent.com/ for detailed service descriptions and sign up details.
“Joyent focuses on removing unnecessary complexity from technology so teams spend their valuable time achieving their goals, not wasting it wrestling with their computers,” says Joyent CEO David Young. “We have focused our development effort integrating modern organizational and notification technologies, such as […]

What does it take to run a successful web-application business during the Web 2.0 growth era? Can you just build it? Will they come? As we know, the barriers to starting web based businesses are at an all time low, due to hyper competition in the hosting industry among other factors. As such, web-applications are being introduced at a very rapid rate. While these “new” services are very exciting, the economics of web 2.0 have not been tested yet. Many have tried to quantify the economic validity of some of the more popular on-line picture and web storage providers.

What they don’t understand is that none of these new business “start-ups” will matter, let alone succeed, if they cannot manage the value chain. Ah yes! Sound management techniques and practices have their place with Web 2.0. Why write about 37signals? Because they have a deep interest in solid management techniques as is evident on their “Signal vs. Noise” blog.

Saginaw News Overhaul

February 19th, 2006

This is an open letter to the powers that be at the Saginaw News. Please consider modernizing the way you deliver your content to the masses. Currently, the Saginaw News is available on the same cheap pulp that has been staining fingers black for generations. Subscriptions are available to interested parties both in and out of state. While that may have cut it for quite some time, it doesn’t really cut it for people like me.

Telecommuting for the Masses

February 18th, 2006

Call centers have were a very important part of business during the past two decades. Call centers were so pivotal that they were considered an industry unto themselves.

That’s an interesting statement. What started out as a telecom solution has become a billion dollar industry. We all know that Saginaw, MI has been married to several different industries historically: lumbar, agriculture, automotive, and health care to name the largest.

LoginRecovery.com

February 18th, 2006

10.23.2005

Windows security has just taken a turn for the worse! As if there were not enough programs of “cracking” a Windows password available for download. Enter Loginrecovery.com. This site has been established for legitimate reasons. I myself stumbled upon this site after locking myself out of my own Windows machine! I know I know, I promised never to use Windows again. “Windows free in two-thousand and three”. Those who know me, have heard me say it.
